How can we see the internal 3D structures of an organism?

KRIS: Hey Ara, teach me something.
ARA MAHAR: Sure. Let me teach you one of my favorite histology techniques. So usually when we do histology, we have to take tissue samples and cut them up really small and then look at them under the microscope. But there's this technique called tissue clearing where we can actually take whole organs and make them see through by using a bunch of chemicals. So this is what it looks like.
So you can see here, this is what a brain usually looks like for a mouse. But using certain chemicals we can actually make them completely see through. And then you can image them under a microscope in 3D without having to cut them up at all. And you can get these beautiful 3D images of whatever structure you're interested in.
